The only thing as frustrating as losing work due to Premiere Pro crashing, is not even being able to open the program in the first place!

Before giving up, see if Premiere opens via any of the normal methods:

  • Double-clicking the icon on your desktop
  • Clicking the icon in the Start menu
  • Double-clicking the .exe file in the installation directory
  • Opening the app from the Creative Cloud desktop application
  • Trying to open an existing Premiere Pro file

If none of these methods work, there is still hope. Here are some common problems and how to fix them.

General Fixes

If you can’t identify the exact problem,

  • Restart your computer! (Maybe do this anyways, you know it’s been too long since you did that.)
  • If nothing else solves the problem, you can try uninstalling and reinstalling Premiere Pro. This should be a last resort, however, as it’s likely that the other methods will solve the problems.
  • Right-click the icon and select Open As Administrator.

A Premiere Pro process is already running

Sometimes when Premiere Pro doesn’t open, it actually has opened, but just has not displayed on your screen. In this case, you can open up Task Manager (press ctrl+shift+esc to access quickly), and see if Premiere Pro is in fact running. If so, you can end the task, then open Premiere Pro as normal. This will fix the problem, and you can repeat the process if it happens again.

Specific Errors and Error Codes

There are a multitude of other programs that could interfere with Premiere Pro or cause specific errors. If you’re fortunate enough to get an error message when Premiere Pro fails to open, you should search the internet for that specific error. It’s likely that someone else has already encountered the problem and found a solution.
