In an interview clip above from The Late Show, Stephen Colbert asks the man himself about an image in which the main character sits slumped on a bench in the rain — a moment oddly reminiscent of the famous that went viral over a decade ago.
“I’m just eating a sandwich, man!” says Reeves, the moment the image comes out. “Man, I’m eating a sandwich!”
Colbert’s response? “So you’re not actually sad in ‘Sad Keanu’?”
“I was thinking. I had some stuff going on,” says Reeves. “I was hungry!”
Ultimately, Reeves doesn’t appear to understand why he’s so meme-able. But judging by his improvised song at the end of the interview (“?MEME ON ME?”) he doesn’t seem all that concerned about it. And, hey — the meme even appears to be influencing art now, too. One day soon we’ll see that comic scene on the big screen () and things will have come full circle.
