Veils are traditional part of bride’s outfit, symbolizing virginity and purity. The veil was also a part of superstition that it is bad luck for the groom to see the bride before marriage. This relates in particular to the arranged marriages, and the veil was protecting bride’s face from her future husband. In the ritual of wedding, sometimes the groom removes the veil from the bride’s face, which states that he is ready to “consume” the marriage.
Ancient civilizations such as Greeks and Romans, believed that wearing a veil is protecting the virgin from evil spirits. Color white in the tradition of weddings stands for safety and something clean and untouched. As it opposes to black, it also has the role of protection and it stands for a clean start and successful beginning. Every color has its role in our traditions and rituals, just like something blue is there to bring us purity, love and fidelity.
There are different types of veils, various styles, length and designs. There are no rules if you should or shouldn’t wear a veil, but if you choose to add these lovely symbols to your perfect ceremony, traditional veils would usually be blushers – the top layer of a two-layered veil – over your face while walking down the aisle.
