Digital products come in many forms, and each of them needs to be promoted differently. When you start to promote digital products to your audience, the first question will be where should you promote them? Advertising or marketing in the right place is key to having a successful campaign. Otherwise, you risk wasting your time and money showing your products to an audience that doesn’t care.

What are Digital Products?

A digital product is any purchasable item that exists digitally! This can include ebooks, video games, online courses, video effects, photo filters, and countless other examples. Digital products have plenty of advantages over physical ones:

  • They have an effectively infinite inventory, so you can create one product and sell it any number of times.
  • They can be delivered to the customer instantly rather than having to be shipped.
  • You can send updates to customers easily.

However, like any product, digital products must be marketed and promoted. In this article, we will discuss 10 places to promote digital products, and why they’re useful.

1. Your Own Website

Step one of promoting your digital products is to make sure your website is set up properly. If you can set up a store on your website, you should make sure you do so. Hosting all of your products in one central location with full control over how they look is a nice advantage to have. For larger products like an online course or bundle of templates, you will want to create a sales page. A sales page addresses customer pain points, answers common questions, highlights the main selling points, and shows what’s included. Once you get some happy customers, putting their testimonials on your sales page can go a long way. Lastly, you’ll want to make sure your website and any content on it are search engine optimized so that your website is discoverable by people searching for the products you sell.

2. Sellfy

Sellfy is one of the best-known e-commerce platforms, and you can use it to create a store for selling just about any sort of digital asset. In addition to traditional digital products, Sellfy also lets you sell print-on-demand products and subscriptions. The platform also comes with some marketing features. They have an email marketing system to contact subscribers and past buyers, a discount code and coupon system, and an upselling system to offer additional products to customers. You’ll still need to promote your products elsewhere, but having an effective selling platform is a great start.

3. Instagram

Instagram is a highly visual and highly searchable social platform, making it a great place to talk about your digital products. Whether it’s an educational course, an ebook, or a photo filter, you can use Instagram’s visual nature to showcase the most important feature and selling points. You can even create educational content based on the type of products you offer, in order to attract an audience. Once you build up a follower base you can also use Stories to keep them engaged.

4. Etsy

Marketplaces like Etsy can be useful, but they do limit your level of branding, in exchange for a large built-in audience. Instead of paying for a website subscription, you’ll pay Etsy a percentage of each sale you make. Because of the crafty audience, Etsy is the perfect platform to promote digital products such as craft designs, DIY guides, downloadable prints, and even audio. It is a website generally associated with handmade crafts, but you can certainly make a name for yourself with digital assets.

5. Facebook Ads

Of all of the platforms for running advertisements, Facebook can be one of the most effective and targetable ad platforms. With billions of Facebook users and a plethora of data on each and every one of them, a highly customized audience can be an extremely effective way to market a product – either physical or digital. You can promote the product itself, an informative landing page, or an email signup list. Include a compelling offer like a discount code or something that makes your product truly unique, in order to drive clicks to your product page.

6. Referrals, Affiliates, and Sponsorships

When you don’t have a platform to market or promote yourself on, why not work with someone who already has an established platform? By working with other businesses, people in your network with a following, or influencers in your space, you can get your product out to a wider audience.

Referrals are generally colleagues that are willing to promote your product for free or in exchange for a favor. Affiliates are often other businesses or individuals who can continually promote your product to their audience and get a portion of each sale as a kickback. Sponsorships come in the form of an influencer or business promoting you product in an agreed-upon manner for a flat fee – they can instead sometimes get a portion of each sale they refer. The three terms can sometimes be interchangeable, but they all have the same general purpose of leveraging an existing engaged audience that may be interested in your niche already.

7. Reddit Ads

Reddit ads are becoming an increasingly popular advertising platform but are still fairly untapped. They may have a lower cost than Facebook or Google ads. They are also highly targetable since Reddit is split up into niche communities. Reddit ads also blend in very well with other posts in a user’s feed. You can even customize the text or image of your ad to make it follow the format of a popular or relevant subreddit. Reddit users tend to dislike shameless marketing, so make sure your ad offers discussion, new information, or some sort of additional value. If you do manage to succeed at Reddit ads, you’ll have some great customers, as many Reddit users are passionate about their communities and deeply involved in their interests.

8. YouTube

Even if you don’t have an existing YouTube audience, creating YouTube content can be a great way to promote digital products. They can actually serve multiple purposes! The most obvious is to make a video all about your product. This is not likely to get very many views, however. The next option is to sneak your product into a more widely-relevant video. You can make a video about your niche and offer your product as a solution. For example, if you sell photo editing presets, you can create a tutorial about photo editing, and mention that your own photo presets are available for purchase to achieve the same looks you show in your video. Be sure to include a link in the description of your video! Overall, you want to create content that people want to watch – not content that you think makes your product look good.

9. Leverage Your Existing Platforms First

If you already have an established audience somewhere, focus on them! Many people think that in order to successfully market a product, they need to start a new platform. But this can sometimes be a waste of time! You may spend hours and hours trying to capture an audience on Instagram, when in fact Instagram users are not really interested in what you’re promoting. But if you already have a really strong email list, for example, why would you want to spend hours on another platform? You should always start with your strongest existing platform, because your established audience will likely be your best customers. Then if you have the extra time and resources to experiment with other platforms, you can.
