Fall is fast approaching: the leaves are beginning to fall from the trees, and those that like to plan ahead are already whispering about this year’s hottest Halloween costumes.
For the fashion-conscious, the arrival of fall can only mean one thing: it’s time to pack away your thong sandals and your swimsuit and start thinking about the rich colours and soft layers of fall dressing instead.
If your fall wardrobe is looking a little tired and uninspired then now is the perfect time to choose the new season pieces you’d like to inject new life into it.
Planning a little pre-fall retail therapy? Here are the five pieces that everyone should have in their wardrobe this fall:
Choose Chelsea Boots
The meteoric rise to fame of the Chelsea Boot began in the 1960s when the Beatles transformed it from an ordinary shoe, to the most popular and desirable boot in the world.
In recent years, the style has had a resurgence, and they have quickly become 2017’s most fashionable and popular boot.
Named for London’s fashionable and up-market district of Chelsea, these are boots that were originally worn for riding but they were soon exclusively worn for shopping trips, concerts and festivals, and strutting up and down Carnaby street.
Then, as now, the bold and the beautiful we’re clambering to get their hands on the most fashionable Chelsea boots, season after season.
The reason that Chelsea boots are so popular for fall 2017 is clear to see: these are boots that perfectly straddle the space between summer and winter, just as they straddle the world of both formal and informal dressing. You can wear the right Chelsea boot for any and every occasion.
We love Chelsea boots so much that we designed out own! We used our knowledge of fashion to create a pair of boots that were stylish, comfortable and easy to wear.
These are boots that will grab your attention, receive admiring glances, and can be worn anywhere!
It is often said that the shoes make the man. Choosing your new shoes each season, therefore, is one of the most important decisions that you can make.
When choosing shoes for fall/winter 2017, you really can’t go wrong if you choose to rock a Chelsea boot.
Add a Faux Fur Collar
Leather jackets and biker jackets are still on trend for fall 2017, but this season they have been updated with oversized faux fur or shearling collars.
When it’s cold outside there is nothing better than having something warm, snug and cozy around your neck. And these jackets feel like you’re wearing a super-soft scarf, all the time!
There are many different ways to wear this trend, and a wide array of different jackets to choose.
Whether you channel Tom Cruise in Top Gun (added aviator shades are optional) or a Russian General in a thicker and more formal woollen, a faux fur collar will immediately update your favourite coat or jacket.
If you already have a coat or jacket that you like, that fits well, and that you would like to wear again this season then why not consider giving it a fashion-forward fall update by simply adding a fur collar or shearling scarf to your look, rather than purchase a whole new coat!
These can be purchased relatively inexpensively, making it one of the easiest and most cost effective ways to update your look for fall 2017.
Missoni, Burberry and Yves St Laurent have all showcased faux fur and shearling details on their outerwear this season, making it the perfect trend to adopt if you find heritage brands appealing and want to adopt a high-fashion look.
If you want to freshen up and update your style by purchasing a new coat then here are some of our favourite pieces from some of our favourite designers. New outerwear is one of the best ways to update your new season style:
Update Your Knitwear
If spring/summer 2017 was the season of the graphic tee, the fall/winter 2017 is definitely the season of the graphic jumper. Graphic knitwear is bold, bright, and designed to attract attention.
It’s hard to show off a cool graphic tee when the temperatures plummet but, luckily, the designers are one step ahead of the weather this season by introducing the coveted graphic knit.
These are jumpers and sweaters with vibrant, high-octane images and slogans that are sure to ensure you stand out from the crowd.
This knitwear has a very retro feel and is incredibly reminiscent of the sweaters worn with pride during the 1970s and ’80s, but these aren’t bad taste sweaters and they shouldn’t be worn with irony.
Instead team your sweater with plain pants in luxe fabrics and your favourite sneakers, to lend your outfit a modern edge.
1980s and 1990s nostalgia is a key trend for this season, and was championed by a huge number of designers including Dolce and Gabanna (see their regal-inspired nod to the graphic sweater above), as well as Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors.
Graphic knitwear is a tricky trend to pull off because there are so many options to choose from. A good rule of thumb is to pick a sweater or jumper with a black or neutral coloured background, so that the pattern you choose isn’t too overpowering.
Beyond that, you really can be guided by your own taste: if you choose patterns and designs that you love then you won’t go too far wrong!
Wear Wide Legged Trousers
Skinny jeans and cigarette pants have dominated the menswear market for years, but this season it’s time to let your legs breathe and free them from constriction: wide-legged trousers are back!
Whether you choose your pants in crepe, cord or a thick and starchy wool-blend, choose a finish that is wider than you would normally opt for.
A subtle nod to this trend would to be to swap your skinny jeans for straight leg ones. If you want to really embrace the fashion-forward approach to new season dressing then
The key to getting this look right is to choose trousers with a more slouchy and unstructured style (with or without pleats) and to pair them with a fitted fine knit sweater or shirt.
Balance is key here, so you should never pair wide legged trousers with a wide or loose top.
Georgia Armani and Prada were both champions of this trend (interestingly, they both used cord extensively in their collections).
We love the loose blue trews from Prada above, which look particularly eye-catching when paired with the tobacco overcoat.
If you want to add a pair of wide legged pants to your own closet then Armani and Prada are both great brands to choose. Here are our picks of some of the best pieces from the brand to sport this season:
Because wide legged trousers will leave all attention on your legs, it’s important that you pair these with the right chooses.
This is a great outfit to pair with your chelsea boots, but if you’re looking for something a little more formal then a polished leather derby or brogue would also look fantastic. Avoid sneakers, unless you secretly want to channel a 1990s skater boy!
Say Hello to Silk
Silk shirts have been a wardrobe staple this summer, and these versatile statement making pieces show no sign of disappearing.
This can in large part by attributed to Louis Vuitton, who have a new found passion for the piece and keep sending them down the runway season after season.
The modern silk shirt can be either plain or patterned, depending on your taste: if you tend to shy away from wearing bold patterns then there’s no reason to shy away from this trend.
Simply choose a silk shirt in a rich block colour, such as petrol blue or khaki green. Avoid black silk unless you want to look like a gangster from the 1980s!
The key to wearing a silk shirt is to think about the texture of your outfit. Layer your silk shirt with a buttery-soft leather jacket or a chunky knitted cardigan.
Add wool or cord trousers to really amp up this textural effect. This is a great way to add interest and detail to an outfit that is fairly simple and tonal in colour.
Avoid teaming silk shirts with silk or silk blend pants: as well as being impractical, this would also look too shiny and flashy.
Conventional wisdom suggests that the stylish man needs just 24 pieces in his wardrobe to put together an array of stylish and fashion-forward outfits.
When you own the right kit, dressing well is easy, which is why it’s so important to update your wardrobe each season and inject new life into it.
Buying just five new pieces this season will completely reinvigorate your closet. Don’t be afraid to try new things, and to experiment with colours and textures that you may not have worn before. From shearling to cord to silk, texture is a really important trend this season.
So leave your denim and cotton pieces behind and look for something a little more interesting instead: you’ll soon have all eyes on you for all the right reasons!
