Toronto-based designer Waley Gao had an interesting 2018, announcing his label Tired Lab alongside a variety of capsule collections that propelled his name into the world of idiosyncratic fashion. His signature use of patchwork design mixed with military sensibilities, showcased through various handstitched garments and accessories, has helped in making him one of the industry’s most fervent up-and-comers. One thing to note about Gao’s immense work ethic is that each piece is made-to-order — based on the specifications given by each customer. Now the designer has returned with a Spring/Summer 2019 capsule collection, offering up utilitarian outerwear, trousers, transformable chest rigs, and more.

The new collection carries on with the imprint’s tantalizing aesthetic, prioritizing an eclectic mix of fabric patchwork, use of zippers, and various discreet details. Most notable in the range is the Entropy Reversible Padded Jacket, which utilizes these design cues in its Kimono-style design. One side is rendered completely in patchwork fabric with dangling threads, while the other resorts to a bomber-esque nylon with bandana patchwork paneling emblazoned on the shoulders. Another outerwear highlight is undoubtedly the Cropped Flannel Jacket with three elongated zippers running parallel down the front of the jacket, rounding off the piece with a removable patchwork detailing that can be converted into a scarf. Also included are a variety of Gao’s signature trousers, the highlight of this capsule being the Dislocated Patchwork Pant in olive, featuring a variety of cargo pocket details and a zipper pocket on the right leg’s rear. Moving into accessories, Gao retains his imprint’s utilitarian flare by supply the Phase Vest in olive and black iterations, which can also be converted into a tote bag.

You can check out the brand’s latest capsule collection above, and if you’re interested in picking up a piece, head over to the Tired Lab’s website where prices are ranging between $60 USD and $1,300 USD.
