Tesla Model S Plaid arrives: 'This is something you have to feel to believe'

Tesla’s much-hyped performance upgrade is here. 

At Thursday’s Fremont, California event — where Tesla makes its electric cars — the Plaid new tri-motor version of the Model S was unveiled and delivered to the first 25 customers. “It’s the quickest production car of any kind ever made,” Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on stage, sporting his usual black leather jacket. “Sustainable cars can be the fastest cars, safest cars, most kick-ass cars in every way.” 

As posted on the Tesla website, the $129,990 Plaid upgrade (which went up by $10,000 just before the big event) boasts some impressive stats: 

  • 0 to 60 mph in 1.99 seconds

  • 1/4 mile in 9.23 seconds at 155 mph trap speed

  • 200 mph top speed
