The project will not see an official, public release but rather exists as a case study into sneaker design and how far the boundaries of existing designs can be pushed. The design studio has shared their progress on Instagram, giving fans of the futuristic silhouette a look at the molding, samples, and coloring process.
The RAL7000STUDIO ZX Mutant toys with the traditional split between upper, midsole, and outsole by wrapping the entire sneaker in one material that extends from the outsole to the upper, sort of like how a ribcage holds your inner organs in place.
XL Extralight is the material of choice for the outer part of the shoe, while a neoprene sock liner sits inside and provides structure (and comfort) on the inside. XL Extralight is made using byproducts and scraps, preventing the materials from ending up in landfills.
adidas has previously worked with Mr. Bailey from Concept Kicks to reimagine the adidas Superstar. Bailey’s ammonite-inspired Superstar went viral on Instagram, similar to how RAL7000STUDIO’s design has dominated Instagram feeds over the past few weeks.
The final sneaker will be limited to 40 friends & family pairs and will arrive in 6 colorways. Keep your eyes peeled for more information regarding the RAL7000STUDIO ZX Mutant. Until then, enjoy a look at the beastly shoe above.
